The guide to the best restaurants on Elba

Two suggestions to try out on different sides of the island

“Good Food”

WHAT IS THE HI GUIDE?
This is an innovative guide to dining on Elba and includes the best restaurants on the island as selected by a team of experts in the hotel and gastronomy profession. The guide is available both in paper and digital format, in English and in Italian, and is updated annually. It is provided free when booking a room at Hotel Ilio Boutique Hotel, and will be delivered in the welcome kit provided for guests of the hotel.

HOW ARE RESTAURANTS SELECTED?
Every year, a group of restaurant specialists, led by the personal manager of Hotel Ilio, visit Elba’s restaurants and aperitif bars and compile a score card rating different aspects such as the quality of the cuisine, the courtesy of staff, the location, furnishings and services. The restaurants that get the best scores are then included in the HI GUIDE. Each place mentioned in the guide has a brief presentation of the features that make it unique and recommendations about the most appreciated and interesting dishes.

HI BAR APERITIF ON THE WESTERN SIDE
Evening on the West Coast of Elba? We recommend you stop off on the Bay of Sant’Andrea for an aperitif at the HI BAR, within the grounds of one of our favourite hotels in the area, also open to the public. As in the philosophy of the hotel, the bar is also a place where talent and experimentation find their right space, and where many successful barmen have begun their careers. Enjoy your cocktail on the terrace overlooking the sea, in the lounge or in the hotel gardens.

A TABLE AT HIGH ALTITUDE, PUBLIUS
Publius has been a “cult” for high-quality dining for many years, as is confirmed by Maurizio Testa, editor of Hi Guide, who refers that he has always had positive feedback from customers of this renowned restaurant. Publius is located in the medieval village of Poggio and enjoys a marvellous panoramic view on the northwest coast of Elba. Well known and appreciated for meat dishes and the attention given to detail, you will be delighted from the very beginning with starters, indispensable delicacies, served on lovely olive platters. The wine list is also very interesting.
The menu of the restaurant is particularly attentive to guests with celiac disease and gluten intolerance.

BARKOLLO, APERITIF ON THE EASTERN SIDE
A somewhat irreverent name (from the Italian verb, barcollare, meaning to stagger), for a venue of great professionalism and experience.
Mario and Chiara run the bar and prepare extraordinary cocktails and aperitifs, which, if desired, can be accompanied by their famous and very tasty hamburgers.
Aperitifs can be drunk inside or at tables outside in a picturesque corner of the old town of Porto Azzurro.

DINNER IN PORTO AZZURRO, BOTTE GAIA
Refined and intriguing cuisine that has found its natural space on the pages of HI Guide for many years now. Botte Gaia boasts a full-fledged team of female chefs, whose talent has seen them win recognition during the finals of the “La Prova del Cuoco”, the Italian television cookery competition. The restaurant is perfect on sunny days, with a lovely, cool outdoor courtyard. There is also an indoor dining room for those who prefer to eat in a more enclosed space.

TIPS FOR SINGLE
Lone travellers in search of excellence? Trust in a hotel that offers a travel specialist, who can assist you in planning your stay and suggest the ideal places to visit and things to do. It is located on the western side of Elba, close by the restaurant Publius. For info: Personal Manager >

TIPS FOR COUPLES
A perfectly romantic weekend is made up of a thousand details. To enjoy them all, don’t forget to treat yourself to dinner at Publius. And nothing could be better than staying in the nearby Boutique Hotel Ilio, just a few minutes drive away. We recommend booking the Mediterranean or the Tuscany style rooms, with refined retro design.

TIPS FOR FAMILIES
Porto Azzurro, with its many services and proximity to the sea, is a firm favourite with families with children. The friendly town is also the starting point for pleasant boat trips along the coast or excursions to the Capoliveri or Rio Marina mines, especially suitable for a fun, different day out. You could combine all this with a wonderful evening at Botte Gaia.
