Cycling through a majestic open-air mineral museum

in the company of the President of the Capoliveri Bike Park, Maurizio Melis

“More than 100 km of cycling paths”

A BIKE PARK FOR EVERYONE: EXPERTS, AMATEURS, FAMILIES AND GROUPS
“The Capoliveri Bike Park has 5 routes departing from the town of Capoliveri and covering the Calamita promontory,” says Maurizio Melis, President of the Capoliveri Bike Park. “We are talking about a maze of paths that can be travelled along by bicycle, of various levels of difficulty, crossing the length and breadth of the promontory and which cross each other at various points, enabling itineraries to be personalised, mixing routes of varying degrees of difficulty”.

THE SCENIC MIX OF DIFFERENT VIEWS
OF LUNAR LANDSCAPES AND ARCHITECTURE FROM THE PAST

“The most appreciated characteristic of the Capoliveri Bike Park? Certainly the variety of landscapes and ecosystems changing along your route. Cycling along the routes in the Bike Park will give you a sensation of being in a large show of nature and passing from one scene to another. Initially, the routes pass through a thick and fresh Mediterranean forest, and the scenery gradually changes to hints of the mineral mining areas, in the Ginevro, Vallone and Macei areas, where the surprise of unexpected scenery reaches its peak. Here, one cycles among enormous terraced areas, witness to the mining in times past and imposing industrial archaeological remains which characterise the area, true open-air mining sites.

Landscapes are crossed which at times seem to be from the Grand Canyon; the iron oxide which is typically prominent in the area gives a beautiful reddish colour to the landscape, with speckles of the green Mediterranean forest and ornate hints of turquoise in the areas where streams cross the areas rich in copper minerals. The liveliness of the colours enriching the entire promontory is surprising.
We suggest that you stop and visit the underground mine, the deepest on the island, descending to 24 metres below sea level.
The routes also cross stretches with marvellous views in which the sea, with the horizon adorned by the profile of the islands of the archipelago and Corsica, is the real protagonist”.

A MAZE OF PATHS PERFECT FOR MOUNTAIN BIKES
“The routes are well looked after and have suitable signage. There are 5 routes in all, of varying degrees of difficulty. There are easy ones, like route A, the ring around the Calamita, an “easy” route 19 km long suitable for families. Or there are intermediate routes and other much more difficult ones, such as route E – LEGEND CUP, which is 41 km long and as “difficult” as it is exciting”.

“not to be missed”

CYCLING BY NIGHT
“The “Capoliveri Legend Point” bike point in Capoliveri periodically organises group excursions departing in the evening at sundown. Visitors can admire the beauty of the sunset and views of Corsica and the nearby Golfo Stella, spectacles with an exciting range of colours. The journey continues by night, giving a very exciting experience of nature which I advise you to try”.

THE OASES OF WILD ORCHIDS
“Walking along the paths in the Capoliveri Bike Park during spring will allow you to admire the beauty of the flora and fauna, and the flowering of numerous species of wild orchids, for which the Calamita promontory is an ideal habitat”.

TIPS FOR SINGLE
“If you are travelling on your own, our advice is to participate in the group excursions that are organised directly by the “Capoliveri Legend Park” bike point in Capoliveri, in Piazza del Cavatore. You will be able to rent the equipment needed for the routes and also receive interesting information on other ongoing initiatives. You will discover the secrets of these enchanting routes in the company of a guide”.

TIPS FOR COUPLES
“The magic of sunset always gives you special and incredibly romantic memories. If you are a couple, enjoy an excursion to the beach at Cannello, famous for the streaks of white snaking along the dark soil typical of these mineral areas, ending with a sunset walk along the seafront from Capoliveri towards Calamita”.

TIPS FOR FAMILIES
“The ideal route for families is route A – CALAMITA, a 19 km ring with slight climbs and descents, difficulty: easy. For the less expert bikers, those who are not physically prepared or are of a more advanced age, there is a possibility of cycling with pedal-assisted bicycles. The “Capoliveri Bike Park” in Piazza del Cavatore in Capoliveri hires pedal-assisted bicycles suitable for a few hours’ use”.
